QUICK FIRE ROUND with Michael Søndergaard

- what was the first photography book you bought?
The first photo book I bought was a Robert Mapplethorpe book I found in a second hand book-shop in Italy.
- what is your favourite colour?
Red, always red, any shade of red!
- who are your photographic influences?
Sally Mann, Alec Soth, Floria Sigismundi, Robert Mapplethorpe, Ren Hang, Ryan McGinley.
- what is your favourite museum?
So many lovely museums but my favorite one is Fondazione Prada in Milan, I’ve had so many incredible art experiences here. Even the cafe, designed by Wes Anderson, is stunning.

- if you could buy any photograph which would it be?
Mapplethorpe shot a close-up of his office manager Marcus Leatherdale where he’s holding a rabbit draped over his shoulder. I saw it exhibited in Aarhus some years ago and I honestly thought of smuggling it out.
- your favourite holiday destination?

Even though I love going to all the old cities of Spain, Italy and France I always end up finding myself in Southeast Asia. Not sure why, but I guess I just feel right at home in the extremely hot, humid climate.
- if there is one living person you could photograph who would it be?
I have a huge print of a photo of Ezra Miller in my living room, it fills the entire wall. Since I put it there 10 years ago I’ve been wanting to shoot a portrait of him myself. I find that there is something extremely appealing about him.
- what is your guilty pleasure?
My biggest guilty pleasures must be my love for really cheap German milk chocolate and extremely long political tv debates.
- what is your favourite city?
I love Reykavik. It’s beautiful, cozy, quite green and it’s the only capital of Western Europe with no McDonalds or Starbucks - but with it’s only penis museum. I mean: what’s not to like? Oh, and this was the city where I first met Ian McKellen, we had a brunch together and he has encouraged me to create art ever since.
- which charities do you support?
I like to support any charity helping people being suppressed. Right now I am trying to raise money for the Centre for Black Equity - supporting leaders, institutions & programs for health, economic & social equity for Black LBGTQ+ Black People. https://centerforblackequity.org
