Artist of the Month - Yves De Brabander

 Portrait, Yves De Brabander

- what was the first photography book you bought?
Don’t remember exactly, but has to be either Teenage Lust by Larry Clark or The Ballad of Sexual Dependency by Nan Goldin. I was still in photography school, somewhere mid-90s and there was this huge show setup in Antwerp called “Veronica’s Revenge” showing this crazy whole “new” generation of artists like Araki, Nan Goldin, Wolfgang Tillmans, Larry Clark, Cindy Sherman, Thomas Ruff, … I was amazed. This show really opened my eyes on the medium of photography.

- what is your favourite colour?
Black.

- who are your photographic influences?
Larry Clark, Wolfgang Tillmans, Peter Hujar, Nan Goldin, Robert Mapplethorpe, Luke Smalley …

- what is your favourite museum?
I can get lost for hours at the Prado in Madrid; I’m a big fan of Wiels in Brussels, they often have the right artists at the right moment - it’s currently the only space in Belgium left putting up a solo exhibition of eg Wolfgang Tillmans, and the Hamburger Bahnhof in Berlin.

- if you could buy any photograph which would it be?
Wolfgang Tillmans, “Anders pulling splinter from his foot”. Don’t know why but it always inspired me, it’s a pure and honest snapshot, a contemporary translation of the classic Spinario sculpture.

- your favourite holiday destination?
Difficult… there’s a lot. I used to be in love with Iceland but because of over-tourism it’s not that appealing anymore the last few years. My favorite destinations are Kyoto, Laos, Cambodia, Java, Vancouver, Los Angeles, Rio de Janeiro. I need some deeper connection on holiday, these are powerful places, overwhelming in nature and culture, good energy and lots of it.

- if there is one living person you could photograph who would it be?
Jared Leto would be cool; or Louis Garrel, both seem to have a very charismatic expression and an enigmatic but pure and shameless camera appeal.

- what is your guilty pleasure?
Too many! Natural unfiltered wine, stuffing up my dirty socks in my sneakers, sniffing Poy-Sian inhalers, getting lost on Instagram reels just before bedtime…

- what is your favourite city?
I have a love/hate relationship with both Antwerp (the city I live in) and Berlin. The mood is usually good, great parties, great atmosphere, reasonable priced amazing food, great museums and bookstores. But it can get really weird, lonely and depressing as well…

- which charities do you support?
Usually LGBTQIA+ rights, HIV & sexual health organizations and movements. In the late 90s I was an active member of the “Aidsteam” and “Pink Action Front” in Antwerp, doing demonstrations and actions in Antwerp and Brussels to raise awareness and STD prevention. Later I shot all campaigns and pamphlets for Sensoa (our national sexual health organization), visuals for queer parties, gay bars and organizations as well.
