QUICK FIRE ROUND with Jacopo Paglione
- what was the first photography book you bought?
It was a little book published by Phaidon about Nan Goldin’s work. I remember somebody mentioned her name in school and I’ve never seen such raw and honest photography until that moment.
- what is your favourite colour?
Although my photography has really vivid colors, the one I tend to gravitate always to is black.
- who are your photographic influences?
My main influence is definitely the people I surround myself with, the love I feel for them, the experience I go through as well as the ones of my community.
Photography speaking, there is a lot of contemporary work and young new talents that I enjoy but I always end up looking up to my first loves: Gregory Crewdson, Ryan McGinley, Philip Lorca di Corcia, Bill Henson, Larry Clark, Wolfgan Tillmans, Jens Olof Lasthein, Jeff Wall, Lise Sarfati, Todd Hido.
- what is your favourite museum?
I have an old connection with La Galleria Nazionale in Rome. I also get great inspiration from MOMA in New York, and great memories from Galleria del Cembalo in Rome, a true historic palace in the center of Rome with a hidden garden that hosts some very interesting photography exhibitions.
- if you could buy any photograph which would it be?
Any from Philip Lorca di Corcia’s “Hustlers” series.
- your favourite holiday destination?
I usually tend to avoid big cities preferring places with a lot of nature, places to hike, very few people and a lot of history and traditions.
- if there is one living person you could photograph who would it be?
I tried to think about someone but honestly the pictures I am most proud of are the ones with my friends and family.
Also I get the most satisfaction by getting to know someone on a deeper level, hearing their stories and creating a bond that I try to portray in a picture. So it literally can be anyone.
- what is your guilty pleasure?
I would say listening to EMO and metalcore music I used to listen to when I was a teenager at max volume picturing myself skateboarding through the city.
- what is your favourite city?
I hardly have a favorite one! I love different ones for various reasons. The last city I fell in love with was New York. I think Rome and Naples would definitely make top positions with heir rawness and their people’s honesty.
I love to explore so probably the list will change and get longer with time.
