This was one of Tyler's first self-portraits. He said: "I’ve always found photographs of people the most compelling, but for a long time the idea of photographing people — myself included — was terrifying. Thanks to years of classical ballet, let’s just say I had a complicated relationship with my body, particularly my bum.

Looking back, this image became a two-for-one: learning to photograph people and making friends with what I saw. I’m very happy I did."

The forces that drive Tyler Udall’s work are a combination of his own sexual identity and the evolving societal shifts toward the acceptance and understanding of the LGBTQ+ community. His undeniably personal and emotionally compelling photographs are shaped by the familiarity the artist has with his subjects, most of whom are friends and past lovers.

As an emerging photographer, Tyler Udall (b 1979) has already made a big impact in the world of photography. He has shot for many high profile fashion and art magazines; published three books: August 2009-August 2010 (OH WOW Gallery, 2010), Auguries of Innocence (Armour Press, 2015), and I AM (The Little Black Gallery, 2019); and exhibited worldwide. His images are reminiscent of other great fine-art photographers Juergen Teller and Ryan McGinley.

He has had three solo shows at The Little Black Gallery London; at Photo London with The Little Black Gallery (2015); and was part of the group show PINK at Colette Paris (2017). His series Etudes premiered at PHOTOFAIRS / San Francisco (2017), followed by a show in Shoreditch, East London with The Little Black Gallery.

Based in London in the early 2000’s, Udall was Senior Fashion Editor at Another Man, Another Magazine, and Dazed & Confused, and was involved in creating iconic covers of Kate Moss, Kirsten Dunst, Tilda Swinton and Natalie Portman. He moved to New York as Creative Director for the agency Fred and Associates, where he teamed up legendary fashion greats with world leading artists. Udall is currently based in his home country Canada as Fashion Director at the Blanche Macdonald Centre in Vancouver – Canada’s top fashion school.
