14 January - Iain Bell, Composer
BOYS! BOYS! BOYS! MEETS ... Iain Bell
Described by the BBC as “one of the 21st century’s most compelling musical dramatists” and named in Attitude Magazine’s 2024 list of LGBTQ+ trailblazers, Iain Bell has spent the past decade thrilling audiences in leading opera houses and concert halls worldwide.
His operatic debut, A Harlot’s Progress, premiered to acclaim at Vienna’s Theater an der Wien in 2013 and launched an international career spanning major commissions and co-productions. Bell’s subsequent operas have been staged around the world including in London, New York, and Mexico City. A 2022 gala at Prague’s Smetana Hall featured excerpts from these works with Diana Damrau revisiting the title role of A Harlot’s Progress.
Bell’s concert works reflect intersecting themes of London, myth and queer identity. Recent collaborations include Rolando Villazón, Stuart Skelton and Ruth Wilson, while major premieres have included Beowulf at the Barbican with the BBC Symphony and Chorus, Aurora at the BBC Proms, and The Hidden Place at the Enescu Festival with the LSO.
Bell’s sixth opera, Medusa, premieres at La Monnaie in 2025/26, alongside new productions of earlier stage works.
