Lucas Murnaghan photographed Matthew Crawford in a Los Angeles pool in 2019 for what became Mind Over Matter.
A face is the most recognizable feature in a human being. This image strips away the recognition, and the subject's identity doesn't necessarily fall apart. He holds his composure with nothing to prove it, no expression to read, no eyes to meet. Without a clear face to fix him as one specific man, he stops being himself and becomes a multiplicity of beings. That's why people are drawn to his image when they see it: there's a version of themselves in it.
This is the cover image of Lucas Murnaghan's debut book, Beneath the Surface, and one of the most recognized pieces in his archive. Editions live in private collections across Canada, the United States and Europe.
This is the final edition of Mind Over Matter in 31" x 31". For a piece this central to Murnaghan's work and to how most people first encounter it, this is the last chance to bid on it.
